The City panel, seems to have issues with a proposal for a new office tower at 333 King Street East which will house operations of the Toronto Sun. Their main concern was that the height, massing and articulation of the building was too overwelming for the King Street East neighbourhood. Some of the City's points are highlighted below:
How well do the proposed and built form and massing respond to the existing and planned context for this area in the King Parliament area in terms of height, setbacks, and stepbacks. This is particularly true with respect to the original 10 loors and the King Street East as a "Special Street"
Height and Massing
The Members of City Council expressed concern that with the proposed height, and suggested it was too tall, and did not fill the context of the King-Parliament neighbourhood, as stated above. Those members noted that while the original proposal was too dense, at 16 floors in their opinion it was a better fit for the area than this current incarnation. There was also note that at floor plates reaching a size of 26,000 square feet, it was almost as big as towers in the downtown core and suggested that a smaller floor plate would be a better fit here.
