World's Tallest Wooden Apartment Building Built in Melbourne.
Compared with the towers that are chasing one another's height records in the Mideast and Asia, but Australia has a champion in Melbourne: the world's tallest wooden apartment building. The Forté stands 10 proud stories high, built all of wood, specifically cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels that were made in a factory in Austria and shipped to Australia in what builder Lend Lease says was a more environmentally friendly process because there was so much less travel involved during the construction than conventional materials would have required.
CLT uses solid wood panels glued together with the grain in each layer laid at 90 degrees to the ones above and below for surprising strength.
