Traffic considerations with regard to the One Yonge Project.
More details emerge on the potential size of the 1 Yonge
Project, by Pinnacle and the near 100 storey towers predicted on the site of
the current Toronto Star Parking Lot. Pinnacle International purchased the
property for a record $278 million dollars and now plans one of the largest residential
projects ever seen in downtown Toronto.
The preliminary estimate is one tower
at 98 Floors and a second tower at 92 floors, and two 70 floor towers. And the total number of Units for the entire project, is to be around 3500 units. Of that I would say that maybe 1000 residents would be on a daily outbound commute to the inner 416 suburbs or the 905. Here the expanded capacity of the Air Rail Link to Union from Pearson, the expanded capacity of Union Station, and the potential for a downtown relief line, and an Eastern Queens Quay LRT line to relieve any added trips for outbound downtown capacity.
There is already debate online as to how much
traffic and density the downtown core can tolerate, but we know that people in
the core are far less likely to drive or even use transit for their daily
errands. We also know that the relative amount of upgraded transit and transportation infrastructure
required for the development of this lot along with the Oxford Place project,
will come online with the ongoing upgrades at Union Station, the bring capacity
up to 800,000 people per day, and then there will be the Air Rail Link from
downtown to the Airport that will add more outbound capacity to our city, no
mention of the new LRT cars, and hopefully a Downtown Relief Line into the core
from the city’s east end.
