CN Tower - Tallest Freestanding Tower in the World 1975-2010

The CN Tower was built in 1975 by the Canadian National Railway company on the lands that they owned by the Toronto Waterfront. It was built initially as a communications tower to transmit radio and tv signals over the ever taller skyscrapers in the downtown Toronto core and further afield. However it also included an observation level, which allows visitors to see the entire city, as well as far south as the Buffalo, and Rochester, in the United States, and Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario.

The tower is located at the corner of Front and John Streets, in the Entertainment District and next to Rogers Centre (aka Skydome) home of the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Metro Convention Centre. The Tower will soon be revitalized with a new lobby podium and the addition of an Aquarium by the Ripley's Museum which will house a shark tank

The Tower lost it's title as the world's tallest free standing structure in 2010 when the Burj Khalifia over took it as the tallest.
