Toronto Leads the Western World in High Rise Skyscraper Construction

Toronto Leads the Western World in Highrise Development

The Toronto Star, did a little article regarding the fantastic skyscraper growth Toronto is seeing now, even with all the talk of a condo bubble, the cranes keep coming, the sales keep piling up, and the skyline keeps changing.

There is no stopping Toronto, we are well on our way to becoming one of the world's greatest cites. I know as Torontoians, we don't want to deal with the pressure of being a global city, we still want to be a farming backwater, and Great Lakes Industrial Port.

However immigration and the push to live downtown has changed us. It's changing us as we speak and the following article from the Toronto Star points to that. No other city, outside New York embraces downtown Living like Toronto. Not Montreal, not San Fransico, Not even Boston. Toronto is just taking it to the next level, we are outbuilding Manhattan (New York City) 2 to 1 in skyscraper construction. Even mighty Manhattan is no match for Toronto.

Toronto has now begun to reach into the higher heavens, building so tall and grande that even locals are in disbelief at what is happening in their fair and very humble and seemingly unworthy city. The amount of Tall Building Construction happening in Toronto is outpacing every other city in the Western Hemisphere, and not just by a little bit, but by a lot. Toronto currently has some 190 highrise towers under construction, so much more than the next city, that we have more towers under construction here than the rest of Canada combined, or almost as much as the entire United States combined.

By 2015 Toronto will be home to 44 towers and highrises which will exceed 150 meters tall. That number is more than triple the amount of skyscrapers we had at that hieght just a short 7 yerars ago. This seemly impossible feat has been verified by the Chicago based think tank that monitors all worldwide skyscraper construction.

Toronto has lead Canada as well as the United States into a new style of thinking when it comes to dense urban planning and city building, it has become the envy of the Western World, espeically in North America where the Young, Rich and Upwardly mobile flood into downtown apartments, whereas in American Cities people flee the downtown and escape to the hip lifestyle of suburban and farm living far on the outskirts of dangerous and grimey city living. Two perspectives, but the investments in downtown living have made Toronto one of the supreme Global Cities on Par with Toyko and New York despite having just a fraction of the population, although growing at a much, much faster rate than the former.
