Today, I thought I would bring you an informative post on how a Skyscraper is built. I live in Toronto, and as you know there are many skyscrapers in this city, and many more under construction. I will take you through how a skyscraper is constructed after bank financing has been arranged.

1. Shoring and Piling

Before a skyscraper can be built the land must be cleared and prepped for Excavation. To do this, any existing structures need to be cleared, and the land free of obstruction so that piles for the foundation can be installed. Constructors bring Shoring and Piling rigs to the site of the future skyscraper to imbed piles into the ground which will stabilize the site for Excavation. The cassions are filled with concrete to ensure the area around the site does not fall in on itself, in Toronto you want to get down to the bedrock, as this is the most stable rock on which to rest the tower.

2. Excavation

Once the site has been prepped and the shoring and piling competed the ground of the future skyscraper is excavated down to the basement levels, sometimes it can be 2 or 3 floors, most times it's between 4 to 8 floors down before the foundation is met.

3. Foundation Pour

Once the foundation is met, the concrete pour begins to establish the sold foundation of the tower. This can be anywhere between 1 to 3 feet thick of concrete to ensure the skyscraper is stable and does not fall over.

4. Concrete or Steel Forming.

Depending on if the Tower is to be built with steel or concrete the tower is formed / framed all the way up to the top floors. As each floor is completed the concrete forms are raised. In the case of steel construction, the tower moves up like a lattice work, or a spider web. Until the top floors are reached.

5. Cladding Installation

As the forms move up wheather they are steel, or concrete the cladding (glass, precast, brick, stone,) is applied to the frame of the tower. There are two types of cladding, one is window wall cladding that is framed and fit into the tower itself, and then there is curtianwall cladding which hangs off the tower itself, and has a more seemless appearance in comparison to window wall.
